Calling all professional musicians!

Cirque du Soleil

Do you sometimes feel like your instrument is an extension of your own body? I’ve seen a viola player wince in pain when someone knocked into her case as she prepared to busk on the Victoria Line, and the saddest moment at Kuiperfest this year came as we mourned the death of a beautiful, dearly loved guitar belonging to Honeyfeet. Crushed in a tragic accident, and beyond repair, there was no consoling its owner, who truly seemed to feel he’d lost a limb.

If this is something you can relate to, and you yearn to use your instrument to its full potential, incorporating its movements into those of your own body, then you should think about joining the circus. The legendary Cirque du Soleil is on the hunt for talented bandleaders, singers and musicians of all kinds to join its next tour. Details of auditions can be found here.

Siliconfession

Farm Collar by siliconfession

A couple of weeks ago I was heading into the city centre on the 35 route, when I saw a huge white goat, placidly chewing away on a grass verge. At a respectful distance stood a teenage girl, looking slightly bored and a little embarrassed, obviously waiting for someone to relieve her of her duties. That’s not something you see every day in the heart of South Brum.

Here’s something else you won’t see every day: Siliconfession is a gorgeous, detailed world of handmade silicon wedding dresses, foot shoes (what else can I call them?) and totally spellbinding, sometimes disturbing body adornments of all shapes and sizes.

The Farm Collar took around 6 hours to make- I’d like to think that’s a goat in the centre. Search out the 35 hour wedding dress- no danger of getting upstaged by the guests in this one!

Sophie, creator of these surreal pieces, allows the shapes to flow from her naturally: “I have an idea in my head, not quite sure where it comes from, and then I start playing with materials . Is soon as I play its like an unconsious stream of thought and usually turns out pretty pleasent.” See more of her work here.

beat-suite-banner

This week, Magpie Brown having vacated the Treasure Nest for a trip to look for lace and glitter in Brittany, the inimitable Dolhasz and Skeleton from Beat Suite crept their way into Rhubarb Radio’s treetop shrine to audio joy, to share some yummy, juicy beats of their own selection. Click here to have a listen, and if you’d like to hear more, tune in to Beat Suite’s regular slot from 12am-2am every Thursday morning on Rhubarb Radio. Thanks to Dolhasz and Skeleton, Treasure Nest will be back this Sunday for something completely different.
